Lain Singh Bangdel (1919–2002) is Nepal’s foremost artist, novelist, scholar and preservationist. From 28th September to 16th November, Rossi & Rossi will present the artist’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. Revered in Nepal as the “Father of Modern Art”, Bangdel was the first amongst his countrymen to study at l’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Bangdel had no reservations about being at once modern and Nepali, as he depicted the Himalayas in both realistic landscape paintings and abstraction. The selection of works on view also unravels the artist’s experience as a ‘Nepali new to Nepal’, since he didn’t live in his home country until he was forty.
